How to Become a VTuber on a Budget: What You Actually Need
Ready-made model vs commission, what rigging means, VTube Studio's watermark and licensing catch, webcam vs phone tracking, and a realistic starter kit.
You can start as a VTuber without commissioning a custom model. The working minimum is a ready-made Live2D model, the free version of VTube Studio, a webcam or phone for face tracking, OBS Studio, and a background behind the model. This guide covers each piece, what it really costs, and the one licensing detail most beginners miss.
The three ways to get a model
| Option | What you get | Trade-off |
| PNGTuber | Two or more still images that switch when you talk | Cheapest and fastest, but no head movement or expressions |
| Ready-made Live2D model | A finished, already-rigged model that follows your face | Not unique to you, but live the same day you buy it |
| Custom commission | Original art plus separate rigging, built to your design | Usually the most expensive route by far, with a wait of weeks or months |
A custom model is two jobs: an artist draws the character in separate layers, then a rigger makes those layers move. They are often different people with separate prices and queues. That is why "just get a custom model" is rarely realistic advice for someone who has not streamed yet.
A ready-made model lets you find out whether VTubing suits you before you spend commission money. If it does, you can commission later — and you will know far better what you want.
What "rigged" actually means
Rigging is what turns a drawing into something that moves: head turns, blinking, mouth shapes, eye tracking, hair physics. An unrigged Live2D file is only artwork. When you buy a model, check that it says rigged and that it is made for VTube Studio, the app most VTubers use to run their model.
VTube Studio: free, with two catches
VTube Studio is free on Steam and on iPhone and Android, and the free versions include loading your own models. Two details matter:
- Watermark with webcam tracking. In the Steam version, a small VTube Studio watermark appears when you use webcam tracking. It does not appear when tracking from a phone. A paid "remove watermark" DLC on Steam removes it.
- Monetised streams need a paid version. According to the VTube Studio FAQ, if you use it commercially — monetised Twitch, YouTube Super Chats and similar — you must buy at least one of the paid versions, because of Live2D licensing. For most streamers the watermark DLC is the simplest way to cover this. Check the official FAQ for the current terms before you monetise.
Webcam or phone tracking?
| Webcam (Steam version) | Uses the camera you already have. Fine to start with; more sensitive to lighting, and shows the watermark unless you buy the DLC. |
| iPhone or Android app | Generally smoother expressions. iPhone and iPad can connect over USB; Android connects over the network. The free mobile app limits streaming to your PC to a few minutes at a time — the PRO upgrade removes that. |
You can run both: VTube Studio uses the webcam while it can see you and switches to the phone's data when it loses tracking. Whichever you choose, light your face evenly from the front. Most "my model looks dead" problems are lighting, not the model.
Putting the model on stream
- Load the model in VTube Studio and run the face calibration.
- Set VTube Studio's background to transparent.
- In OBS, add a capture source for VTube Studio — game capture with "Allow Transparency" ticked, or VTube Studio's Spout2 output with the Spout2 plugin for OBS for the cleanest edges.
- Layer from back to front: background → model → overlay → alerts and chat.
Our Live2D setup guide covers calibration and hotkeys step by step, and the VTuber background guide explains the layer order and the most common transparency problems.
The background matters more than you think
A model floating over a game is a game stream with a mascot. A model in a room is a VTuber. The background is what places your character somewhere, and for Just Chatting segments it fills most of the screen.
- Animated beats static. A loop with slow movement — rain, steam, fairy lights — makes a still scene feel live without pulling attention away from your model.
- Leave room for the model. Busy detail directly behind the character fights with the hair and outline.
- Match the palette of your model and overlay. A pastel model in a neon cyberpunk room only works if you meant it to.

A realistic starter kit
| Item | Start with | Upgrade later |
| Model | Ready-made rigged Live2D model | Custom commission once you know your character |
| Tracking | Webcam you already own, or an old phone | Recent iPhone with Face ID camera |
| Software | VTube Studio (free) + OBS Studio (free) | VTube Studio paid DLC once you monetise |
| Scene | One animated background | Matching overlay, screens and alerts |
| Audio | Any USB microphone | XLR mic and interface |
The microphone deserves the same budget priority as the model. Viewers will tolerate a simple model with clear audio; they leave a beautiful model with a muffled mic.
Make the scene look like one design
Once the model and background are in place, the next step is an overlay with a VTuber layout — a frame designed to sit around a full-body or half-body character rather than a webcam box. Many of our overlay packs include a dedicated VTuber layout for exactly this. For the whole approach, see building a stream setup that looks like one design.
FAQ
How much does it cost to become a VTuber?
The software can be free. Your real costs are the model, a background and a microphone. A ready-made model keeps the start-up cost low; a custom commission is the most expensive part of most VTuber setups.
Can I VTube with just a webcam?
Yes. VTube Studio's Steam version tracks your face from a regular webcam. Good front lighting makes a bigger difference than the camera itself.
Do I need an iPhone to be a VTuber?
No. iPhone tracking is popular because it is smooth, but webcam tracking and Android tracking both work.
Is VTube Studio free for monetised streams?
The VTube Studio FAQ says commercial use, including monetised streams, requires buying at least one paid version because of Live2D licensing. Check the current FAQ before you monetise.
Can I use a ready-made model on a monetised channel?
Our models are licensed for personal use on your own channel, including monetised streams. Reselling or redistributing the files is not allowed. Other sellers set their own terms, so always read the licence.
Can I change a ready-made model?
Basic adjustments — expressions, hotkeys, physics strength — can be made in VTube Studio. Changing the artwork itself requires the original layered files and Live2D Cubism.
